Welcome to Gilly's Place
A few years ago my granddaughters asked me to put together a cookbook of about 20 family favorite recipes and when I did the 20 pages looked rather skimpy so I added more, and more, and more till their binders held 60. Heavily embellished I gave them to the girls at Christmastime. Every Christmas since then I've added 60 more pages to their collections and have reached the 300 mark...and they're looking forward to getting even more. These are not random recipes, they're all tried and true. Anyway, when word got around it seems everybody and their second cousin wanted a cookbook so I began selling them to cover the cost of materials and now I'm passing them on to others as digital freebies, who like me, enjoy family, friends, cooking, and sharing. Print the pages to a standard letter size and save them in any old binder that blends with your kitchen. Please do print them for yourself and gift-giving to family and friends but please do not claim as your own as it wouldn't be fair to the designers I buy from or the wonderful talent that is freely given by bloggers. I'd love to hear from you and if you leave a comment on a post I will reply on the same. Please don't leave anything on the 4shared page, I seldom think to check those.

Ham Steak and Hoppin' John
from SnagWireMedia...
Do you need some good luck in the forthcoming year? I know I definitely do, and our economy most definitely does!! That is where this little handy Southern tradition and yummy meal comes in to save the day! The majority of Southern families serve a dish called Hoppin’ John, on New Years Eve at midnight or on New Years Day for breakfast and eating the meal is supposed bring good luck.
Not a New England dish but I did make it last year at this time and sorry to say, it didn't bring me much luck but it was different and we enjoyed the change-I think! Enjoy and for all of you that make this or any variety of this dish to bring in the new year I hope the luck it brings you is all good, better than last year, and the best you've ever had.

Greek Soulvakia with Lemon Rice
Hi everybody, hope you all had a fantastic Christmas with family and friends for those of you who celebrate the reason. I'm a child of the universe and whatever race, religion, or creed you adhere to do so with all your heart to welcome the greater one than you, open your heart to love and love will make its home there. I was blessed this year in that old wounds with a family member were reconciled and the family is a whole unit once again. Prayer is a powerful instrument and always heard if coming from the heart and soul. I thank the Creator Spirit that the New Year has special signigicance for me.
I had unexpected company who kept me away from the computer during the past week or so but things have gone somewhat back to normal, whatever that may be. I'm slowly putting my house back to its familiar easy lifestyle with no glitter, no glamor, and no fattening pies and pastries for a while. Now I begin to plan and scheme for Christmas 2011 and slowly shop the year long to make it easy on next year's budget. The girls loved their cookbooks, not so heavily embellished this year because I was laid up so long and I did run out of Canadian Pork Pies with the extra people here but all in all it was a lovely and relaxing time for us.

I was happy to see these numbers and want to thank each and every one of you who took the time to comment. I get so few of those I often think I'm one of the characters in the movie LOST IN SPACE. BTW, Pssquimages, thanks for your recent comment, I hope the cake turned out well for you. Hopefully, things will improve this year, I hope to spend a little more time here but one never knows. Life happens. For now I hope you give the soulvakia a try, this is sooo yummy I just wish I could remember where I picked the recipe up.

5-Alarm Chili
Morning all, a light snow here in Maine and that's helping with the Christmas mood. No school today so Carly will be helping me with cleaning, decorating, and more goody trays as soon as we've had a good breakfast. Think I'll make a few Bailey's Irish Cream Bundt cakes, one for us and one or two for giving. Sounds good, doesn't it?
Debbie, a long-time friend of mine, has a chili party celebrating the first snowfall of the season. Can't give you the recipe as it's never the same because you see guests are allowed to drop anything they choose (within reason) in the chili pot. Needless to say sometimes her party can get pretty rambunctious. Thought you might enjoy this one from one of my favorite recipe sites.

Just For You (gag gift)
Get your sense of humor out - when I had my craft shows years ago this was one of my big sellers. Seems like people enjoy passing out gag gifts at Christmastime and this one's no exception. I'd bring a case of 48 rolls and they'd sell out in no time at $3 apiece.
For every gag gift you will need:
1 roll of toilet paper
1 sheet of tissue paper
1 lable
and sticky tape
Roll the TP in the sheet of tissue and afix the lable. Simple as that.
Size lables to page/landscape.

Crock Pot Candy
Monday, Monday, good ol Mama Cass, every time I hear the day comes around I end up singing just those two words over and over - Monday, Monday. Sometimes this week I have to switch to Christmas Carols or the tree and trimmings will never go up. Have to admit though I'm keeping up with the goody trays. Hopefully today I'll be making the crock pot candy. This recipe (from a recipe swap on PcCrafter years ago) makes a ton of candy. I usually get about two medium-sized tins or three smaller tins of yummy sweets from this one recipe. I process the peanuts for a smoother candy. Speaking of processing I bought myself a Ninja last week for fifty bucks and it's great. Three pulses and the job is done.

La Boquiera Smoked Salmon Toast
Did you know that
(from AccessMyLibrary)
"Canapes (ka-na-pays) are finger foods that are passed around while you are waiting for dinner. It is served with cocktails. An hors d'oeuvre (or-derv), is the first course of your meal. It is served to you while you are already seated on the table. For example, smoked salmon on toast passed around while you are having cocktails and waiting for dinner to be served is a canape while smoked salmon with lemon caper sauce served to you as a first course once you are already seated at the dinner. "
That being said here is one of the many finger foods we thoroughly enjoy during the season.

Christmas Pudding Truffles
Morning everybody! Looks like another dull day, not really raining just misting enough to make it a sort of blah day. Hope the sun is shining in your neck of the woods.
A neighbor brought me a cookie tray yesterday and that reminded me I have to think about getting mine ready for friends and neighbors also. I think this year I'll add the fruitcake truffles-if I can find fruitcake- it's becoming a rarity in these parts. Even if you don't much care for fruitcake these are pretty darn good so give 'em a try if you've a mind to.
